- This is a long story:
-
- I own an old XT-clone, which still works just fine, thank you. It has a
- port enabled for a modem.
-
- A while ago I was given an old Motorola modem, and recently (finally) got
- the DIP settings so it will be compatible with my freenet--but no software.
-
- A friend sent me software he has called Crosstalk, and thought it would work.
-
- Now, suddenly, I have been given a much newer Cardinal modem, sans
- software and sans manual for either, although the software disc is
- promised in the mail.
-
- It appears that this modem (unlike the Motorola) relies on software for
- settings (I need "null" parity), and I know that an 8088 processor cannot
- deal with faster transfer speeds--but that there is some generic sort of
- software that slows it down so that "any" modem will run on an XT.
-
- What do I do at this point? Probably the Motorola would work, but it is
- only 1200 baud. I don't know what the software coming is named, but I was
- sent the Crosstalk manual with the disc, and it would be nice if I could
- finally hook things up using that. Being a computer illiterate, I have
- probably left out some crucial fact, but is there somebody who would be
- wiling to correspond by E-mail to help me out? Thanks in advance.
